This delightful, small hotel is located in the old area of Obidos which is one the few walled towns still remaining in Europe.
Obidos is a charming hill town, with attractive white washed houses dominated by the Castle. It was rebuilt in 1148 by Afonso Henriques after he took the town from the Moors.
Rua Direita, the main street, leads to Praca de Santa Maria where there is a Manueline pillory decorated with a fishing net.
This is the emblem of Dona Leonor, wife of King Joao II, who chose it to honour of the fishermen of Obidos who tried in vain to save her son from drowning.
The King of Portugal gave the town of Obidos to his wife on marriage as the traditional wedding gift.
Records show that the tradition of this gift started when King Dinis married Isabel of Aragon in 1282.

When the town and castle were first built, the salt water of Obidos Lagoon came up to the walls of the town. Over the years the land has risen and the lagoon is now fertile agricultural land.
Obidos is approximatley 80 kilometres north of Lisbon and is connected by motorway.
When at Casa das Senhoras Rainhas it is necessary to park the car outside the main gate of the town and walk to the hotel.
At reception, a pass can be obtained to allow access, by car into the old town.
